In Defense of D.E.I. and the work of Racial Justice writ large (#1)

Writer: Pat JacksonPat Jackson

In recent weeks, the new Administration has announced a series of executive orders aimed at rolling back D.E.I. (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) initiatives and generally rejecting the well-established reality that systemic racism, with its attendant inequalities, is a lamentable feature of U.S. society. Those views were further expounded in a February 15, 2025 letter from the Department of Education to colleges and universities which threatens to shutdown efforts to promote racial diversity and equity across campuses nationwide.

In the face of these attacks on racial justice efforts decades in the making, Interwoven Congregations wishes to stand in solidarity with all who labor in the field of D.E.I. or who otherwise are seeking to help our nation fulfill its founding ideals and promise for all Americans. Racism is real and regrettably enduring. But we are not helpless. And we believe that people of faith have a special role to play in moving our society forward in the long struggle for racial justice, healing, and the Beloved Community.

But we have to take our heads out of the sand.
