The writer/activist James Baldwin famously said, "Not everything that is faced can be changed but nothing can be changed until it is faced." And that is the case with the underlying driver of racism in the United States: white supremacy.
While we may tend to think of white supremacy as the domain of skinheads and other extremist groups, the reality is that white supremacy courses through American society, infecting us all. And so we are hosting 10-week study groups (the first begins in March) which will utiliize Layla Saad's penetrating text and guided journal, "Me and White Supremacy." Please note that this study is designed, in Saad's words, "for anyone who holds white privilege . . . this includes persons who are biracial, multiracial, or white passing People of Color who benefit under systems of white supremacy from having lighter skin color than visibly Brown, Black, or Indigenous people." Participants also should hold the intention of wishing to further engage their own faith communities on the issue of white supremacy.
Please also note that, at the urging of Layla Saad, we will employ the Circle Way method of group facilitation that Lalya Saad recommends for group study. This means that the groups will share leadership from gathering to gathering. HOW we do the study will take on added importance as one strategy to addressing white supremacy.
You can communicate your interest in participating in one of the study groups here. There is a $10 registration fee and participants procure their own texts. Space is limited, so sign up today!
Racism is real and it eats away at the health of our society. But we can face it, and chart a new course.
